Hi Explorers, during the Zejt Iz-Zejtun Festival the old church of St Catherine, then called St Gregory the Great (Pope Gregorio Magno), was opened. Explore it with me!
The square building of the church was built before 1436. The actual building was built in the 16th century and for three centuries was used as the main parish church for all the South East of Malta.
The particularity of this church is that it overlooks the three bays of Marsaxlokk, Marsascala and San Thomas Bay. In fact it was used by a watching tower to protect Malta from the invasion of the pirates, from where they used to send signals towards Mdina, the old capital of Malta.
The Grand Master Perellos (1697-1720) bought a villa in Zejtun to further admire the pittoresche procession in honor of St Gregory, that used to be held every year on the 12th of March from Mdina to Zejtun.
